I am having the same issue with 0013 (but not 0012) on Debian Etch, so I tried 0013 on Debian Lenny and it works correctly. I suspect the old versions of avr-libc or gcc-avr in etch, but I haven't done enough testing to confirm it.  

I've been playing with IR quite a bit lately... To do short range remote control you can use just the IR LED and resistor. I started out using code from http://zovirl.com/2008/11/12/building-a-universal-remote-with-an-arduino/ and info from http://www.sbprojects.com/knowledge/ir/ir.htm

Had issues compiling using 0012 on linux, but compiled fine on 0011. Works great...
