I just download and compiled avrdude 5.11.1.  Compiled and talking (did not install) to my arduino just fine.

@lisux
I installed arduino (Ubuntu 11.10,  sudo apt-get install arduino) I got avrdude version 5.10 is my /usr/bin directory. So I am wondering how your is version 5.11.1?
@lisux
What type of computer are you on?  Not the software the hardware.

@rleibner
If you have more then one avrdude installed. How are you making sure you are using the correct one? The command "which avrdude" will tell you the location of the first one the system finds in it path.

How did you install arduino?

I believe Madworm is referring to the version 5.11.1 of avrdude, which I believe your already using according to your first post.

I would try the loop back test

Mine gives the same error if I use 57600 for the baud rate, works fine if I use 115200.

I was comparing the outputs.  I don't know if it matters, but your version of avrdude is different then mine. I am also using arduino 0022.

/usr/share/arduino/hardware/tools/avrdude -C/usr/share/arduino/hardware/tools/avrdude.conf -v -v -v -v -patmega328p -carduino -P/dev/ttyUSB0 -b115200 -D -Uflash:w:/tmp/build2103545438631500123.tmp/Blink.cpp.hex:i

Make sure you have the correct board and serial port selected  in the tools menu.

Plug arduino in your usb port and run the dmesg|tail command in a terminal. post the result.

Hi,
1.  please read troubleshooting guide, search in it for linux.

2. Did it work before using Ubuntu?

3. Try running arduino as root.

with the arduino not running try moving
Quote

to your home directory

10  Using Arduino / Installation & Troubleshooting / Re: HELP! How to DOWNload Arduino sketch (harddisk crashed) on: July 10, 2011, 06:21:10 pm
To recover a sketch from a arduino would require a great deal of work and programming skill.  Much easier to rebuild the sketch.

I have lost sketches by having my laptop stolen and having the battery die and the computer crashed.  I have learned the value of making local backups and off site backups.  If you using Ubuntu check out ubuntu one (cloud).

try running as root.

Libraries for Ubuntu should be in the sketchbook/libraries  directory.  I had to manually create the libraries directory.

nope,  check to see if you have a /var/lock/ file associated  with  your usb port.  if so delete it.

Been try to duplicate your error.  Here what I got so far:
Created a user called "user".
ran the arduino software
* I was unable to access the serial port
exited out of the program

opened up a terminal and ran arduino from there.
It got me a error about a stale device, unable to delete stale device
I exited out of the program

as root I deleted /var/lock/LCK...ttyUSB0

run arduino as normal user, it works...

let me know if this works for you.
