Firmata is not really capable of dealing with the mega and a different firmata (some have proposed FirMega) will need to be written because of some very different pin numbering issues that the mega uses because of its processor. (i.e. its a whole extra pain in the ass)

so for now, the mega is not firmata friendly.
sorry.

Try Maxuino @ maxuino.org. might give you another path to what you are trying to do. we also have a newer firmata there that seems to be much more stable for the mega.

hello friends,

pleased to announce maxuino v.009: http://www.maxuino.org/?p=58;

this update includes an M4L device for communicating with an arduino-compatible device from within ableton, for application ranging from home-made-sensor-based-controllers, to control-voltage driven analog gear.

looking forward to your feedback on the beta release,

the ftdi drivers they pass out with the arduino IDE work great.  I have never tried making two serial objects in max and pointing them to different ports, but it might be possible, and I believe I have heard of others doing it.  as to the OS, 10.5 or 10.6 are working great with max and arduino and maxuino.

we have refined the process over at Maxuino.org
it is a max patch that translates everything for the firmata "firmware" you can load onto your arduino.  the only issue you might have is that for 15 digital outs you probably have to go with an Arduino mega.  feel free to contact us if you need help.

So I have been attempting to get maxuino mega ready, but as you said, firmata 2.1 is clearly outputting a very different set of signals for the mega than for the regular arduinos, and I am not sure that is supposed to be the  case.  the biggest issue is that while running firmata the mega seems to jam up right after starting up and while it can receive, it will not send any info over the serial connection.  avidd you seem to be taking the best route for now.  I also tried to use my custom code for talking between max and the motor shield with the mega, and while the motor shield library is supposed to be ready for the mega, it will not run on the mega board either.  im going to try this protocol just to make sure my boards are working....

you might consider our Max<->Arduino interface called Maxuino (www.maxuino.org) . It uses firmata and so you would have to rethink the control of the arduino to happen in Max as opposed to onboard the arduino, but should suit your purposes quite well.
23  Forum 2005-2010 (read only) / Interfacing / Maxuino v.008 - now for Mega and Teensy boards too on: February 18, 2010, 09:42:01 pm
We are pleased to announce that Maxuino v.008 is ready and has moved to a new home: http://www.maxuino.org.  Maxuino allows you to easily communicate between Max and arduino boards using Firmata.  This was a major overhaul with a totally new GUI using OSC and a new backend that uses javascript for faster translation.  Please test and give us feedback, as we hope to make the javascript into an external object for near perfect speed. A new version of firmata is linked on the page that is ready and functional for the Arduino Mega and the Arduino Teensy boards along with all of the usual firmata capable boards.

so here is a link to one of my course pages where i have a blink the led example using firmata for the arduino and as3glue library for flash.  scroll all the way to the bottom under lecture fourteen.  you will also have to use the tinker proxy or an equivalent.  if this direction is ok for your purposes, i can help you set it up.

Here is the latest update for maxuino. I have done some bug fixes, cleaned the interface and tried to make it more intuitive. More exciting for some of you, I have added support for servos on all digital pins in accordance with the latest Firmata version (2.1beta7) and the great work done by Shigeru Kobayashi and Hans-Christoph Steiner. Enjoy and let me know if you have any questions or requests.

I have posted a new version of maxuino with some very minor fixes to make it work with Arduino 17 and the firmata update.  It still will NOT work with the arduino Mega (sorry...)

maxuino .005 has arrived!

Max + Firmata v2 + ardiuno = big fun!

Hello all, I am just returning to max after a hiatus and in preparing a good max-arduino interface I have gone to the trouble of updating the maxuino port of PDuino which allows easy interface with arduinos that have the standard firmata v.2 loaded onto them. I have tested all of the inputs and outputs and believe I worked through the issues, but since I am by no means a master at this and don't want to step on the original creator's shoes, I wanted to introduce it into the wild on the hope that any issues could be cleaned up by those in the know. Enjoy!

I cant read all of your question, but check out Maxuino at http://maxuino.org for max and firmata communication.

To my knowledge Firmata has not been ported for the LilyPad, and that would be the issue before Maxuino.  If you are able to get firmata to run and test it with something like Toolduino then I would be happy to talk you thru altering maxuino for the lilypad.
