When trying install Arduino Uno with windows XP or 7, it does not recognized under Ports, as written in the Getting Started guide, but under Other Devices. Also it recognized by its microcontroller name not by Arduino Uno.
Is someone has an idea for solving the problem?

I agree, the instructions on the Getting Started Guide are misleading.

Here are the steps that I followed on my Win7 system:

1. Look under Other Devices.  You should see a device named "Arduino Uno"
2. Right click on the device "Arduino Uno" and choose the "Update Driver Software" option.
3. Next, choose the "Browse my computer for Driver software" option.
4. Finally, navigate to and select the "Drivers" folder of the Arduino Software download (not the "FTDI USB Drivers" sub-directory).
5. Windows will finish up the driver installation from there.

My unit is recognized as "Unknown object" in the Device manager. I have tried both Windows 7 and on another computer with Windows XP.
No driver seems to be installed. I am lost!!

Same problem here....unknown USB device.  When I try to update drivers, UNO R3 is found but then I get a third party INF does not contain digital signature error. Doesn't give me a choice to install anyway, just finish to close the wizard.

PROBLEM SOLVED!

Went to Administrative Tools / Local Policies / Security Options and changed Devices: unsigned driver installation behavior from silently succeed to warn but allow installation.

Now after doing a driver update and pointing toward the driver folder, instead of getting the unsigned digital signature error, I got another box warning me of the error.  This box allowed me to check continue anyway and the driver installation was completed.
