I'm just attempting to use the "Sweep" example. And whenever I got it working using an external power supply. But when I try to use the +5v on the Arduino the Arduino disconnects from my computer. Any idea as to why?

The servo draws a lot of current in effect shorting out your arduino board. Powering servos from an arduino is somewhat like trying to jump start your car using a 9v smoke detector battery.
