Topic: Synchronous motor driver waveform for clock. (Read 1 time) previous topic - next topic

I have adapted the code for the "50Hz to 60Hz converting inverter" at http://www.romanblack.com/one_sec.htm for creating a 60Hz output signal synchronised to my local 50Hz mains using a Teensy 2 to drive an old synchronous motor driven clock.
It appears to be working fine but I am wondering if anyone has any knowledge of the effect of driving a standard synchronous motor with a non-sinusoidal waveform. The motor is humming a bit (as is the step-up  transformer) and I don't know if it's due to the stepped driving waveform or is normal.

How stepped is your waveform?  Do you know how much hum it would generate normally from the correct mains?  Are you giving it the right voltage and is the transformer adequate for the load?
