Hi all,
I have a component that I was told is a 5V regulator, yet it doesn't behave as a regulator and I can't find the datasheet. It looks like a basic 3-leg regulator, and the markings say "17-50 0815AL".
Ideas?

Try a search on those numbers. That's what we would have to do.

Is it possible to post a picture of the part?

Pretty safe to say it's not a 5v regulator.

its probably some house branded fet that in its original application was used as a regulation device, many things come in TO and D packs

Those 17-50 markings seem to be an AP1117 5V regulator. Thats short for [AP11] 17 5.0V The 0815 is the date code, 15th week of 2008

So does behave like a regulator after all?

I looked up the part you mentioned and discovered that the pinout for this regulator is different from literally all the other regulators I've ever used. But yes, it is indeed a regulator.

Always good to try several variations on the search. I tried a search on "17-50 voltage regulator" and it zeroed right in. That the pinout is different is probably because the LM1117 v.reg pinout is different from the common 7805 type pinout, in TO220 packages. LM1117 follows the old LM117/LM317 pinout which has been around for decades. They probably also made the TO92 package pinouts different too. If still unsure about hte part, and you don't want to risk blowing it up, you might try hooking it up initially with a current limiting resistor in the Vin lead, say 470 ohms or whatever.

Thanks for the tip. I went ahead and ran 700mA through it since I have several. It works just fine!
