I extracted the microcontroller from the arduino and i tried with no luck to program it in a breadboard.I tried  connecting  a 120? resistor in reset but nothing changed.Any other ideas how to make this work?

More info:

programming as in bootloader?  (I'll assume no since you yanked it from working Uno..but you didnt specify)

Do you have your 'FTDI' lines worked up as in nicks link?

What about the reset pin and resistor?

in my footer I have a few links on standalone threads here..  maybe they'll help
