Did you download Arduino IDE from Arduino.cc or did you install from the Ubuntu package manager?

I found that I was missing a lib.  So I downloaded some using synaptic package manager.  It works...I tried the blink example, and changed it to blink pin 14 and watched it with a meter.  Now if I can get it to work with windoze 7.

thank you
