The other day I looked at the members list and I'm sure there were about 86,000 with the usual motley collection of low-posting members at the start of the list.
Today there are 116,000 and the first 10 pages (at least) are a very homogeneous list of spam-looking names with 0 posts.
Have we been hit with 30,000 bogus members?

I was being hit with 100 members an hour at the peak of our spam wars at forums.hackaday.com
I was being hit with 1000 members an hour at the peak of our spam wars at irshell when that was around
something more popular like arduino ... um thats not that bad
though it could be filtered down to like 10 a month with jack squat effort by the admins by installing a simple plugin for SMF to scan blacklists (like stopforumspam.com) considering this sites stats
have fun
PS:look at signatures

Have we been hit with 30,000 bogus members? Yes. We don't have the tools to purge the accounts faster than they're created.

The spammers just move to "clean" IP and email addresses. The real problem is the don't-give-a-damn ISPs. There's a large ISP here in the U.S. that seems to specialize in servicing spammers. The one that really chafes my butt is in Pakistan. From the IP address details they are clearly subsidized by the U.S. government. My tax money is being used to assist spammers pollute a forum I moderator. A truly painful irony.
