Hi,

Could someone please advise me what pcb socket I should get for an ATMEGA328P-PU, as I would rather solder a socket to a PCB than the chip so I can remove it if needs be.

A 0.3" 28 pin DIP IC socket? If you're ordering online, make sure you get the 0.3" width instead of the 0.6".

Or... buy (2) 14-pin machined sockets from a local (retail store) parts vendor like I do.  They are much easier to get unless you order from Internet.  (mouser/digi-key)  My experience is that machined sockets are "end stackable".

I have ordered 3 or 4 times, and its about a week from when they email you it is shipped (which is about 1-2 days from your order). Strangely, all times, the package comes from an address in Massachusetts. It seems like a residential address, so perhaps they have someone here in the US that receives bulk shipment and then fulfills US orders.

the only catch is, there is a minimum order of $5 even though the site says no minimum order.

If you really need just that one small item, you can get it from their ebay listing, but it will cost you $0.99 shipped.

their shipping cost is usually $2 or less, which I think is extremely reasonable compared to most if not all US sellers that charges an arm and a leg for shipping. You can send first class with tracking for under $2 commercial rate. The price for their parts is extremely reasonable as well. where else can you buy a resistor or capacitor for 1 cent retail, 40pin header for 15cents while everyone else wants over $1 for each!!

where else can you buy a resistor or capacitor for 1 cent retail,

 I have ordered from Tayda before, and they were pretty quick getting me my parts and I was satisfied.

 The only negative thing I have to say, was that my resistors had thin leads when compared to resistors that I had got from places like Mouser. If I was worried about having a rugged circuit board, I would be careful selecting the resistors.

If you use 1/8W  resistors, I've noticed they can have pretty thin leads vs 1/4W.
Once soldered in place they should be durable, unless the leads are left long and they are allowed to wiggle on the board.

Useta... be useful, the clippings from a board were good for jumpers... now they only are good for the trash as they are a major nuisance if left 'accidentally' on/in the work area. Absolutely great to make a brick of an Uno or a Mega board.... If you are 'less than neat' in your work habits. I realize that this isn't a venue to 'Sell' products but I bought a case for my Uno and one for my Mega, they are $10 - $15 form Amazon/Ebay and are great as protection for my little boards. I haven't used one for a project yet... Only have had a Uno for a couple of month's.... Many, Many years as an engineer but on other types of processors/processes. IMO

Overall I like Tayda, I've had a few issues, but on the whole, their prices are good enough that I can't complain. Shipping takes 2-3 weeks which I don't think is all that bad considering. IC sockets, headers, terminal blocks, 7-segment LEDs, DS18B20s, DS1307s, crystals, MAX7219s, all good. Didn't like the quality of their battery holders. Ordered 100nF MLC caps that were advertised as having 2.5mm lead spacing, but when they arrived they were 5mm. Complained, they issued a store credit. Good enough as I'll likely continue to order from them. Ordered a few 3mm red LEDs, they seemed fine, so I ordered 100 next time and they weren't nearly as bright. I could have complained, but figured, hey it's two bucks. Have a third order in now, for 50 LEDs (one buck) so we shall see. When I order from them, I go into it with just a bit of a crap-shoot mindset.
