I would like to be able to highlight text on an LCD text display. By "highlight" I mean either underline a whole string of characters or invert foreground/background of sets of characters. All of the textbased displays I've seen are there permanently black on white or white on black. The cursor seems to be only able to underline a single character. I don't want to go to the trouble of using a graphic display unless I absolutely have to. Does anyone know of a textbased display preferably 4 lines that has such features?

Have you looked at Oliver's m2tklib?
It does menus and inputs on both character and glcd displays.

And all of them use essentially the same controller.  I don't think you are going to be able to accomplish what you want to do with any of the character mode (text only) LCDs.
