If the output for the Arduino IDE is the black and blue border at the bottom of the IDE, then it doesn't seem to work.

For instance, Serial.print("Hello, world!") is never received, why?

It isn't. You want the Serial Monitor. It's the button at the top right, with a magnifying glass symbol.

... and remember to match the baud rate (at the bottom of the serial monitor) with the value used in Serial.begin() or you get gibberish appearing.

This still gets me sometimes :P
