Mr Garrison famously said, there are no stupid questions, only stupid people.  But I believe that some of them are actually trolls.
I have only come here seeking knowledge. Things they would not teach me of in college.

I never got the whole troll thing. How is saying "i'm acting like an idiot on purpose" different from being an idiot? I seem them as the same.

It is a question of intent.  An idiot is simply reflecting their inner nature, while a troll is trying to get people stirred up...

So the former is an indication of the inner nature of an individual, while the latter is an indication of the inner nature of a group...

A troll is an idiot that needs people to react to him personally because it gives him a sense of power. If you don't react to the troll he will go away because he is not getting his warped need for "power" fulfilled.

The same rules apply - if a genius argues with a fool, who wins?

Even the word troll; monster and/or fishing from a slow moving boat.

The troll might also be a fan or worker for a competing product just sowing disruption. But that's more on gaming forums.

I was implying that acting like an idiot on purpose is an idiotic thing to do.

Are these people really trolls, would goblin not be a more accurate description?

I think Mr Hanky would be more accurate still.
