Surprisingly didn't find an answer in FAQ: Why the Arduino form factor is so strange? Is there any reason
to be not strictly rectangular?

Shouldn't that be hysterical Italian design.

As I understand it it was just a whim to make the board more interesting to artists or some such.

An example or form over function if you ask me.

I just saw a video a few days ago (interview) and Massimo said just to make the board's look unique (in it's shape).
