downloaded it and my Zone-Alarm (firewall) tilted because Maria Mole wanted to connect to the internet. Why?
I refused and continued.
Pointed it to my 0.22 Arduino installation and wanted to open an new project based upon Basic/analogRead and an error popped up because it combined the extension .pde and .ino  [translation: the system cannot find the file]

So immediately two strange things ==> so some work to do .

install and un-install worked very well by the way.

Hello, robtillaart

It uses the Internet connection for the same reason the original Arduino IDE uses: To check for a new version, solely.

But I understand the problem with PDE and INO. It's not compatible with previous versions of Arduino, just 1.0 or newer.

The program/documentation should be very specific in describing that, then. I don't allow programs random access to the internet.

I've been using it for a few hours, still can't get a download but we're (Alex and I) hopefully working that out.

I quite like it, the tool bar is a little 1990s (but then so is the official IDE) I feel but overall so far so good.

BTW, I commented about the name here

Its a pity It does not support older versions too (I have some code in maintenance I do not want to port to 1.xx)

I see that you have shortcut keys, but where is the list?

I like it too, it's exactly what I need. AVR studio is a bit too much, and Arduino IDE lacks several features.

However, like Rob, I can't upload to the arduino. Compilation works.

Several reasons no to upgrade I used in the past.
- upgrading might introduce new issues as behaviour changed in some libraries e.g. Hardware serial flush(), timing of loop()
- upgrading costs me more time than maintaining
- the size of some libraries have grown, this might be critical for some big sketches - don't know for sure, not eager to find out smiley-wink
- Current version of the sketches are stable and have no known issues (aka bugs) any more so why upgrade?
- The timing e.g. of millis() / delay() differs and all critical tuning in the sketches needs to be adjusted again.

to show the last one.
Code:
void setup()
{
  Serial.begin(115200);
}

void loop()
{
  Serial.println(millis());
  delay(1000);
}

IDE 1.0.3 output
Code:
0
999
1999
3000
4000
5000
6000
7001
8001
9001
10002
11001
12002
13002
14003
15003
16004
17004
18003
19004
20004
delta of 4 millis in 20 seconds

IDE 0.22 output
Code:
0
999
1999
3001
4001
5002
6002
7003
8004
9005
10005
11005
12007
13007
14008
15009
16010
17011
18012
19012
20014
delta of 14 millis in 20 seconds ( ... 500473 ...600571 ==>  almost 1/1000 )

printing 5or 6 digits + CRLF over serial costs between 0.8-1.0 millisecond@115200, so the 0.22 timing is not that bad in timing I guess..
or is the 1.0.3. a bit too fast?

And yes, it is a per sketch choice to upgrade and which platform to choose. And FWIW my latest sketches are almost all based upon 1.0.3
(I should try the 1.0.4 soon)
