My plan is to make a universal remote control that allows a user to interact with nearby devices such as a TV, DVD player, cable remote, and a fan remote using an Arduino. Which board would be the best to use for this application? Any other feedback on working with such a project would also be appreciated. Thank you!

Any microcontroller that can generate a PWM signal will suffice. Any of the boards with the atmega328 chip will do.

Information regarding IR signals to TV´s: http://www.sbprojects.com/knowledge/ir/index.php

Information regarding an excellent library for IR use with arduino: http://arduino.cc/blog/2010/02/11/arduino-all-stars-the-coplete-ir-library-for-arduino/

The last link also links to the tv-be-gone-project, a universal remote that shuts of any brand TV (or at least, most of them).

Cheers,

Jack
