The vehicle interface (or CAN translator) is based on a microcontroller with two external connections - one to the CAN bus via the OBD-II port, and one to the host device via USB or serial. It passively listens for a subset of CAN messages, performs required unit conversion or factoring and outputs a generic version to the USB interface.

Unless you are implementing custom CAN messages, you will most likely need a pre-built OpenXC binary from the manufacturer of your vehicle. Each OEM can decide whether or not to participate in OpenXC and if so, which types of data they wish to expose.

The firmware for all supported Ford vehicles is currently available to anyone who signs this developer agreement.

The translator is powered via its micro-USB port, which is connected to the host device. CAN messages are received via the OBD-II port in the driver's footwell.

The chipKIT Max32 is definitely not Arduino compatible! It's PIC based and everything in common with Arduino is the header layout. If you have to advertise stuff, don't fool the forum members.

I have not deeply researched the matter, but it was clearly stated on the page that the stuff is ARDUINO COMPATIBLE, therefore was thinking it has at least some arduino-compatible soft, e.g. like C++ software for TI Launchpad 430, which is also based on NON-ATMEGA chip but u can easily load arduino scatches.

Some of the software available for the Arduino platform is implemented platform-independent, but most non-trivial software uses hardware specific features not available on other platforms. Even if the ChipKit32 platform is often shield-compatible with Arduino shields, this is seldom true for the software.  And you stated that the microcontroller is Arduino compatible which is definitely and absolutely wrong. While the ATmegas used in the Arduinos are 8bit microcontrollers, the PIC32s in the ChipKit32 are 32bit microcontrollers with a completely different command set.
