I just installed the software and selected my board (Uno), but it won't let me select a serial port. It's just grayed out...I'm running this on my laptop with Windows 8. Anybody have any suggestions what might be wrong? Is it possible I don't have any COM ports? If so, does anyone know how to get around this?

The Arduino team has created a test version of the signed drivers for Windows 8.
This will be included in the next version of the IDE, but you can download it from here:

http://downloads.arduino.cc/arduino_drivers_win_signed_test1.zip
