Max7219 can drive 8 seven-segment displays - your description sounds like you have 4 digits to drive.
Make sure you get purchase common cathode displays for the 7-segment displays.
For the matrix, there is no difference  between common cathode & common anode, its just a matter of orientation. You will using the matrix with the common cathodes arranged vertically (cathode-column).
