Hi,

I am planning to power my Arduino mega 2560 from a 12V truck battery and was wondering what kinda diode should i use, so that i am able to feed 5V to the board.

You might want to consider a 5V voltage regulator with built-in protection circuitry, and forget the diode.

you will need more than just a diode to reduce 12 volts (+/- spikes) down to something a 'duino can digest
take a look at voltage regulators ...

Don't forget to include the in and output capacitors.
