what is the range of tsop sensors(tsop 1738) generally ...
how to increase the range using the potentiometer

A sensor doesn't normally have a "range" - it depends how much power you put into the transmission, and the sensitivity of the receiver.

I don't understand what you mean by the use of a potentiometer in this application.

The TSOP sensor receives a coded IR light message. The range will depend somewhat on enviromental conditions (nighttime, daytime, other IR interference, etc) and also the strength of whatever is transmitting the IR signal to the sensor. A more powerful IR LED transmitter should increase range to some degree. What range are you looking for?
