Hey guys,
I'm planning to built my own small cnc using steppers to control the linear movement. To avoid inaccuracy after a few rounds I'd like to install IR sensors to double check the movement and if necessary recalibrate the stepper to ensure max precision.

Does anyone of you have any experiences about how accurate IR sensor can measure?

Or is it necessary to use them? (I'm using nema 17 stepper)

Thanks in advance!

Physical limit switches would be simpler, more reliable, and probably more precise than an IR sensor.

I'd agree that a physical switch (microswitch) would be simpler to implement. A slotted IR sensor would certainly work but it's not much fun in a dusty environment.

Thanks guys! Will try it as you said
