I'm not conversant with AWG, as we use metric sizes here. Before metrication we used the wire's diameter. Now mains cable is measured by the conductor's cross-sectional area. e.g. 2.5mm2
for up to 15A (250V). I'm not certain about how thinner wires are measured, as it seems like the manufacturer decides whether to go by area or diameter.
