In the IDE folders, there is a /variants folder.
You need a /1284p folder there.

You might have better luck starting with the mighty1284 cores setup, and copying the mighty1284 variant folder into a 644 variant folder.

I burned the fuses and lockbits and it worked.
It starts up again reading back the same fuses with a 16MHz crystal.

Now to the Arduino IDE.

ITS ALIVE!

I have blink :)

I had to change the signature in Avrdude.conf to 0x1E 0x97 0x06.
and now the ArduinoIDE loads sketches to my 1284P-PU.

Oh happy day :) :)

Could an onboard ATtiny85 running VUSBtiny serve as an USB programmingport?

I know there are issues using USBtiny with flashsize >64K and it wont work as a serial debug?

Yes.

You've got a TV output for debugging.... :-)

Does the USBtiny work with a 1284?

CrossRoads

That is an AVR Programmer?

I don't know. I use Atmel AVR ISP MKii.

And I use AVR ISP v2 which is stk500v2

I have no problems with it but an average user would just want to plug the board into USB and use the IDE?

I don't know, but if it doesn't it must be a firmware problem. Maybe you're the guy to fix it...!

I use the AVR ISP MKii within the IDE. Only sticking point was getting Windows to use the driver for it, that is supplied in an IDE folder. Letting Atmel Studio install the Jungo driver for it complicated that, there is a forum post from Summer 2012 I think that tells how to fix that, and another topic that allows both.  I find Atmel Studio to take waaaaaaaay tooooooo long to start up, so I don't use it, and do not even have it installed right now.

Agreed.
It's just to much with Visual Studio and all.
That's the reason I don't use it either.

The Pololu Programmer was easy.
I just installed the driver and told the IDE to use it.

CrossRoads

The IDE supports the MKii also, it's right in the Programmer list - just needed windows to find the driver. And I complicated that on myself with the Jungo driver first.

Why would someone develope an ISP that breaks at 64K?
I just dont get it?

What happens att 64K?
Pagesize? Buffer? or what?

The PC sends an address and a page and says write.

Whats the difference?

CrossRoads

I think a lot of these things started as programmers for smaller chips, and perhaps weren't kept up as memory sizes increased.

So the problem is the page?

And limited to 16bits?

To disect the USBtiny firmware I need to know what im looking for.
