My vision isn't the best - orange on black is very hard to read (especially in small font!) in the build window

I know there is preferences.txt - its so unfiriendly i haven't looked to see if i can change window colors...

can we have an EASY way (nice dialog box) to configure the IDE for us poor half-blind folk?

You can, along with the font itself, and the size.

In File / Preferences.

But if you need to change the font type, you need to edit the preferences.txt file (in the lower part of the preferences dialog there is a link to do this). I added other options to do this in this modded version (that may help you to get a little bit more friendly environment): http://forum.arduino.cc/index.php?topic=118440.0 (double click, install, next, next, preferences)
