It seems very common for a bunch of projects to have an LCD and buttons on it.  Sparkfun has a really cool products that have these all nicely together (almost a mini terminal, with extras), the only thing is that they either use an ATtiny2313, or an ATMega128.

Here are the product pages:

I think these would make great development platforms, and would awesome if they were "arduino-ized"  (Looks like the ATMega128 already has some support in Arduino??)

Oracle

It's available as a shield at a very low price here http://www.nuelectronics.com/estore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=2

I'm just not sure what kind of trouble I'd have ordering through the mail from the UK.

That looks very cool.  Now I just have to decide if I want to risk customs here (U.S.A. customs seems to be very seize happy lately).

My only thought on that shield would be to get the power via the ISP connector (that's possible, right?) so it can be stacked on shields that block the power header (like the XBee shield for instance).

A minor point still in favor of the sparkfun product is that it has some useful extras on it like a buzzer, a relay, and a OneWire port.  Still, you loose the ability to use shields with the sparkfun design, but there are plenty of Arduinos/freedruinoss/boardruinos/etc that don't accept shields.  If Sparkfun slapped an XBee socket on their design, and made it Arduino compatible, it's be an excellent Arduino/Freeduino.  (TerminalDunio?)

Just my thoughts though.

Now to debate if I want to brave international shipping to the U.S.!  (Sparkfun/nkeelectronics/ladyada/etc, you listening?  If you make an LCD/Button shield like the one Oracle linked, I'm sure you'd have lots of people wanting one!  ;) )

I ordered one from nuelectronics and I got it without problems. It works really well.
