Isn't there an flat panel  quasi-transparent electroluminescent material that changes colors when an electric current is applied ?

Yes, it's called TFT. Just without the backlight. Then all sides would be kind of transparent.

P.S. I build such infinity mirror stuff already...it's incredibly difficult to get the mirrors 100% parallel - you see everything - 2 mirrors facing each other don't know any mercy...

Sure. It's one everyone has seen in the movies. It's called a WORM-HOLE ! (BattleStar Gallactica, Star Trek Deep Space Nine, etc.)

I've no clue yet how to abstract that. And I see (flickering) problems coming when mapping that down into a small 16x16 matrix.

...one single line emitter connecting two 2dimensional Lissajous points with a little aftereffects...
Because of reasons beyond my understanding and control (using Ubuntu + IDE1.0 with a Mega2560) i didn't get the noise function working - so i had to play a bit more with merged sine waves based on different frequencies and phases in order to create a kind of "persistent natural appearing" blob with a high framerate.?
