Bigger Bigger Smaller Smaller Reset Reset

Greetings. I have:
Arduino NG rev. c with Atmega 168
Ubuntu Feisty Fawn

I've uploaded programs to this board before.  I think it was on Windows, but I'm not sure on that account.  The board has been in my drawer for a while, so it might have a hardware problem.

I opened up the Arduino software, and selected Arduino NG.
Got some warnings:

Then I tried to upload something, I got this:
Quote
Binary sketch size: 1114 bytes (of a 14336 byte maximum)

avrdude: stk500_recv(): programmer is not responding
avrdude: stk500_recv(): programmer is not responding

Is something supposed to blink when I hit reset?  Nothing really seems to happen.
An LED connected from +5v to GND works fine.
