Sadly im on my own when it comes to doing stuff like this.

A person in the AVR Freaks suggested the 10k..

I ended up using the wrong diagram for the NPN and had it hooked up backwards.. i fixed that now but still doesn't work. When i apply the 12v to one end, it opens up the relay without having the 5v from the arduino doing that.

I have no idea why this is now working...  >

David, as Lefty says, it will be a lot easier to help figure out what is going on if you can find someone local with electronics knowledge. Perhaps if you say where you are located, someone will volunteer to meet up. Also, have a google to see if there is a local radio amateur club that you could contact.

I live in chattanooga,tn

How much volts should i have when i connect the 5v to the 1k resister and test it on the Collector pin? I am getting 0.07v.

on the base im getting 0.18v

Now when i hook the 12v to one side of the relay i get this
Collector = 1.40v
Base = 0.73v

OK, i went to radio shack and got a butt load of transistors

It seems the 2n4404 (http://www.fairchildsemi.com/ds/2N%2F2N4401.pdf) works fine with a 1k resistor. However, i still am having the problem with no 12v coming out from the relay!

Are you getting the voltage on the collector to go low when the Arduino pin goes high?

Do you hear the relay click when the collector goes low?

If both of these happen, double check that you are wired to the correct relay contacts.

The collector has 12v when 5v is not connected and 0.03v when connected.

Yes, i hear it click just fine.

I have it hook like so:
Pin 2 = 12v
Pin 5 = collector pin
Pin 3 = (should have 12v coming out?)
Pin 4 = 12v

I've also tried this:
Pin 2 = 12v
Pin 5 = collector pin
Pin 3 = 12v
Pin 4 = (should have 12v coming out?)

What am i doing wrong????
