Am I missing something? Here is my setup with my LCD. Sorry for the sub-par image

LCD product page: http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=67-1759-ND

I am using an arduino duemilanove.

Not sure if yours has the same driver, but you might try this http://arduino.cc/en/Tutorial/LiquidCrystal

Looks like your hookup is wrong.

I reconnected my LCD according to that tutorial but it still only shows black boxes across the top line. I adjusted contrast but that didn't work.

I am also using the latest version of Arduino IDE and the latest version of the LiquidCrystal library.

You are connected to the wrong 4 data lines on the LCD. You should be using pins 11, 12, 13, and 14 on the LCD instead of 7, 8, 9, and 10.
