Hi People.

I was having some issues with a new nano. Decided to burn the bootloader again with USBtinyISP. Unfortunately I turned the ISP connector around. Result was "blue smoke" and a component next to FDTI chip blew its lid off. (I think its a tantalum cap) when I connected a battery!

The arduino still powers on when connected to USB, But the 328 gets very hot. It cant connect!

My question is this: Can I repair the Nano by replacing 328 and blown cap, or am I likely to have FUBAR´red it beyond repair?

Obvoiusly this is one of those forum where Images cant be posted in an uncomplicated fashion >. I have some photos, but I cant work out how to post them here)

Post the photos by putting them on a photo sharing site like flicker and put the url between the brackets from the insert image icon.

In theory you can repair anything by replacing the parts. So you stand a good chance of it only being the cap and the processor. However, it could be other things as well.

Thanks Mike. Sorry for late reply, hope you are still looking.....

Here is a photo. I put a red ring around the fried component. Looks like a tantalum cap to me. But what is the value? It is the only visibly damaged part! Anything else worth looking at?

Another?: If I replace the 328, can I then burn a new bootloader to the board using the ICSP and my USBtinyISP?

It is hard to identify the component reference number of the part that is blown. My best guess is that it is a 4u7 but the underside doesn't look like the underside posted here:- http://www.arduino.cc/en/Main/ArduinoBoardNano
Is it a real board or a clone?
Remove the component and try the board without it. Does the PC recognise it is a device that is plugged in? If so then look for a replacement cap and try it. If after that it still doesn't work then try replacing the processor.

Hi Mike.

The nano is a gravitech one. But I bought it on Ebay, so it just might be a clone.....

I tried your suggestion and the board still is not recognised! And the IC gets smoking hot in a few second. I triedboth without the cap and with 4.7 uF - no result. I am gonna try my hands at replacing the IC......once 328´s are in stock again.....

That's not the 386 but the serial bridge. If the 386 is getting hot as well then I would just sack it off and get a new one. Unless you have a hot air gun and are good at surface mount.

So you mean to say that the FDTI should be replaced as well. Surface mount is no problem and I have a hotair-gun as well. But I am thinking that it is probably not worth the effort!
