I have an arduino uno and arduino duemilanove. My duemilanove is working fine, but my uno keeps giving me problem. Previously, it was working fine but on some occasion, when i try to upload a program, it will give an error msg that "the port is being used by other programs", when i did not open any other programs.

Just yesterday, I tried connecting my uno to the comp and there is no tx rx light! Anyone know what went wrong? How can I troubleshoot to know if i kill some chip or something?

Maybe you are not intimidating enough. I'll bet Grumpy_Mike or Richard Crowley could get them to blink.

I could not even select the port, as it could not be detected by my comp.

@zzz - It sounds like it was detecting it before but saying it was in use, now you say it is not even detecting it. It sounds like either the board or the drivers are screwed. I think XP requires drivers even with the UNO so you could try un installing them and then reinstalling them again.

Yup, u are right. It was detecting before but now it wont.
As my comp could not detect the port entirely, I could not uninstall it. I tried adding a new hardware and install the driver, but it does not work either. Not sure if it is the board problem, but the Power light is on, and the Led light will blink upon resetting though.
