total noob here

I followed the trouble shooting guide to the best of my ability.  I have nothing plugged into my uno (sans usb cable )  I have tried many combo's of "plug in usb", "rest arduino", "click upload button" with various timings, and it just won't fly.

Green led: on
orange led: flashing
pin 13 led: flashing
tools > board : uno
tools > com : 3 (only available)
driver:  says I have best version

Any help so appreciated, its not even funny

Close the Arduino IDE
Unplug the board
Restart the Arduino IDE
Is COM3 still available?

No.

Also, I tried running from cmdline so that I could try a lower baud rate.  Also tried plugging usb directly into machine (instead of usb hub).

At this point, you should try a "loop back" test.  A search of this forum will hopefully produce the steps.

Did this fired up the serial monitor... worked fine.  "Coding Badly is my buddy" came back with "Coding Badly is my buddy"  :-P
