Board selection wording in the IDE

Having been a member for a while on this forum, I can't count the number of times beginners to Arduino have trouble selecting the proper board type for their specific board. They are OK if the bought an 'official' Arduino branded board, but if they are running any of the many many 3rd party boards, they can easily get stumped and of course can't upload sketches without errors.

My proposal would be to simplify the board selection wording (or add simple additional 'boards') to a AVR chip type and speed, because that is only what the IDE needs to know to select the proper core library functions, isn't it? Along with the proper comm port number selection of course.
