Glad to hear you're giving it another shot.  Ubuntu should be fine.  I would try these directions, I think they're the most up-to-date: http://www.arduino.cc/playground/Linux/Debian

Ubuntu IS perfect for Arduino ! I don't know why some guys invited its users to compile the sofware and everything else, it is not needed at all ...
For information, after trying to follow these instructions, I just removed RXTX from my system (librxtx-java and everything I had downloaded) and ran the pre-compiled version. And it just works perfectly !
