hello, running mac OS 10.4.9 and i'm having trouble uploading to new diecimila
for the first time.
getting error message

avrdude: stk500_recv(): programmer is not responding
avrdude: stk500_recv(): programmer is not responding

could someone please tell me where i might be going wrong?
(please excuse my ignorance as i have NO experience with these things)

Try the suggestions in the troubleshooting guide: http://www.arduino.cc/en/Guide/Troubleshooting#upload.  If they don't help, let us know.

I also received the message:

avrdude: stk500_recv(): programmer is not responding

and I don't know what to do.

The orange led is blinking pretty much continuously.  I put an led in pin 13 and it's blinking in synch with the orange light on the board.  The blinking seems to pause when I try to upload.

I've tried pushing reset before and as I upload with no noticeable effect.
