My case against karma is this - if I don't know why I received negative karma then it is worse than useless.

Senso

Bad karma because I complained about the orange colour, this is open source baby not open speech.......

If we're not going to receive an explanation of why we got a negative, or maybe negatives would have to be approved by a moderator to ensure a valid reason and not just  a bunch of random key strokes (qwert, or asdf), then I am in favor of removing the negative karma.

Another thing to consider: What about accidentally pressing the negative karma button? If someone accidentally presses it, there is no way to undo it.

I know it's a bit late and all....but the stackoverflow model works for a few simple reasons:
1. other people vote up/down your answer, and not you personally
2. it is only based upon how others view your responses that you can collect all the 'badges' and stuff
3. people who are very active will get a range of badges and stuff and can even become moderators through good, positive use of the system.

So, for people who like badges and karma and stuff, go for it. Others can ignore it, no problems.

However by ranking the answers based on up/down vote, the dynamics of the system change from a 'Thread/Topic' scenario to a 'Question/Multiple Answers' scenario, which is exactly what goes on here at arduino.

...but like I said: it's a bit late to suggest it ;)

In a standard forum like this, i'd drop it.

[edit] I thought I'd add a link to an open source stackoverflow style system (even though it's too late):

Ok, this negative increasing karma with no feedback as to why a particular post might have brought it on is getting to be irksome.
I am firmly in favor of ditching it now.

Well interestingly you can, if you +karma someone within a short time (possibly an hour, I don't know) then it changes it to a + but I suppose you can't quite 'undo it'.

Nice theory.  In reality, that's not how people interpret it.  If someone thinks something I say is not worth the bits it's written on I would prefer to see that quoted and be called out on it so we can discuss it.  You never know, I might learn something.

I agree, look at my negative karma and I don't think I have ever given a bad answer except when the poster did not explain the full circumstances and his hidden information rendered my answer not relevant for that poster (still good info though).

There that should ensure an other few negative points.

Wow: Grumpy_Mike = +81 and -77!
Please remove this bullshit Karma and therefor you can add european times (24h) instead of  AM/PM
which are also 6 hours in the past if i am not logged in (Germany).
Perhaps per link line parameter... 8)

I'm approaching my karma century! :D

Not sure why or how though.

How does European times == 24h?

This would surely inhibit members from posting advice, so the point pops up:
Should we risk GOOD advice because we COULD be WRONG?
I always wait for a few answers before risking myself;
That way, someone else could ( SHOULD ) correct wrong info.

Only one day left for voting on the dreaded dictator known as Karma. Will it fall like the will of the good people of Egypt showed ?

Hey lefty, you appear to be doing pretty well with all this, only -4, make that -5 :D hehehe
