I want to use something to sense what the majority of the color on at tv screen is and have ambient lighting throughout the room reproduce that color.  I'm new to arduino but it doesn't seem like video processing is an option.  What kind of sensor that arduino could support would work best?

What an interesting question. I'm guessing a color sensor would work well for you. How about something like a TAOS TCS3210. There are other choices of course but this could be a good start.

An arduino is used for the LED's
Sources etc available

I've not tried it, but it's on my todo list (long,long list  smiley-grin )

Hehe, I have tried that too, but performance was so bad with it. If I set it to update with 25 fps, it used like 25% of my cpu, and I got an Intel i7 processor with 4 cores, and 8 threads... Then tested it on my dual core htpc... 60% cpu, 3 fps...

Then made my own program for it

Still missing a bunch of TIP120's so I can connect my RGB led bars.

Yes, a i7 for a HTPC is to much I agree.

Any change that we will see your solution?

Those TAOS sensors look promising, I checked mouser and there are a lot to choose from and they are cheaper than I thought they would be.

I was hoping to leave a computer out of the equation so hopefully I can get something working with just the arduino.

If anyone has suggestions on some multi color led lights to use that would be helpful too.  I was hoping to buy some of the GE g-35 christmas lights but can't find them anymore, the only other serial communication ready lights I found were $5 a piece.

I am not entirely sure, but you may be able, if you have an LED backlit TV, take some voltage/current readings off the backlight circuits and use them to help with making the outputs match the intensity of the screen.

Oke, for me using my existing HTPC for films etc it is merely using existing hardware.
And for the news there is no real need for ambient colors.  smiley-cry
