Topic: [FEATURE REQUEST] Please exclude old forum from search engines! (Read 1 time) previous topic - next topic

Hi,

I find it very confusing that everytime I search something about Arduino in Google, I get (nearly) allways only results from the old forum (www.arduino.cc/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num...).

Try it: http://www.google.de/search?&q=DS1307+arduino

Please exlude the old forum from search engine indexing. E.g. through setting "robots.txt" or "<meta name="robots" content="index, follow" />". Some search engines allow more control over the indexing, e.g. https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/

I think, all treads from the old forum were imported to the new forum. So why do you wait to start the transition in search engines?

Old forum under original URL (www.arduino.cc/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num...):

Old forum under new forum URL (http://arduino.cc/forum/...):

After comparing the counts, I think nearly every post of the old forum is in the new forum. Not fully migrated (sorted), but everything is there.

Correct me, if I'm wrong.

Your text says "New Forum:" and then right under that it says "Forum 2005-2010 (read-only)" which would appear to completely negate your theory.
If you check the REAL new forum home page you will see a tiny fraction of those message counts.

Actually, going down into those categories shows that all of the posts were in fact migrated, although they were not sorted. This means that theoretically, if only the new forum were searched it would still get all of the old posts, just on the new forum. Please actually look into what you're talking about before you say it.

Thank you, zonedabone.

I've edited my last post.
It should now be unmistakable.

The index to the old forum is shown in the new forum for your convenience. The old forum is still the old forum.

The new forum has 10,030 posts as this is written (and increases every minute) while the old forum has 354,804 posts (and is locked)

I think, you didn't understand, what I want.

Another try:
Is there any Forum-Post from the old Forum (2005-2010), that I can not reach under the new URL "http://arduino.cc/forum/..." ?

If yes, tell me the post.

If no, what is the reason not to force the search engines to only index the new URL "http://arduino.cc/forum/..."?

You are correct. I don't understand what you are asking.
First, you seemed to be asking for the search function to search only the new forum (the 10,000 posts).

Then please read my first post again and slowly.

I wrote :
[...] "search something about Arduino in Google" [...]
"Try it: http://www.google.de/search?&q=DS1307+arduino"

I newer wrote something about "search function".

Hej,

you are right about the fact that the old forum is predominant at the search engines. Our survey about the way users access Arduino information shows that people are using Google as the main reference for looking for information about Arduino. This is one of the reasons why we haven't done this yet. Our goal is to generate a script that will link the old pages to the ones inside the new forum. However this has a low priority in our list.

Just be patient, we are gonna make it :-) Of course if you know a way to make it happen quick, don't hesitate to send me the info, I would love to get it implemented asap.
