Wondering if it is possible without an ESC.
Only speed, not direction. Unless you use a relay to switch wires to the motor.

Most shields with similar names use very old technology and work only with very small motors.

A brushed motor is the simplest, standard motor.
A simple MOSFET (one direction) or H-bridge (reversible) on a PWM output is all you need.

The magic starts with steppers and brushLESS motors.
Ask the right question, which can be hard for beginners, but this doesn't mean that google is broken.
Experienced responders have a nose for laziness, (they were beginners once)... expecting the poster to contribute to the learning experience.
