Third thing, okay three things;
What the heck there are too many things. Can anybody see parallels between Trump and Nixon? LBJ KNEW Nixon was quilty of treason against the USA by conspiring with a foreign power to help him get elected, but LBJ just could not reveal the sources at the time.

Tricky Dick sabotaging the Paris peace talks to discredit Johnson and Humphrey and blow smoke with talk of honor after betraying all decency was not proven in any public court, likely to be why Nixon copped a much lesser plea after Crooked Agnew went down.

In 1974 I read into the Government documents in our library, the Pentagon papers. What I saw there made Dick's trick look normal. In 1992 I saw a documentary about Vietnam at the end of WWII and the deal Ho Chi had with the US that was broken at Potsdam so the French could keep their colony (and after losing it, their "thinkers" call Americans imperialists!).

I have read about and watched it happen again and again, the wrongs that lead to more war are largely ignored.

Dicky didn't have a dictator streak in him 4 lanes wide. He didn't kiss Russian ass. He didn't lie about everything and actually listened to others and read Presidential level documents.  Trump is too stupid for that, a true Category 5 Moron. Palin should be VP just to make the wack-form complete.

I thought LBJ had actual evidence but it was all covert bugging of embassies so he could not make it public. There are certainly tapes of LBJ saying the US was at war and Nixon working with another country to sink the Paris talks was treason.

I am no historian but I think initially Ho Chi Min and the Viet Mihn were Nationalists just seeking to rule their own country without the French.

I saw a documentary that said Ho wrote letters to Eisenhower stating that they just wanted independence and that they were friendly to the USA. In the documentary it was stated that the letters are in a CIA archive but were never given to the President - if true that is terrible.

US/Soviet relations deteriorated and Eisenhower began to take a hard line with any country that was or might be aligned with the Soviets. The French were helped to retake Vietnam. That pushed the Viet Mihn to turn from being nationalists into the communist Viet Cong. The Viet Cong then managed to kick the French out. Unfortunately the US did not take stock of what happened to the French and instead filled the vacuum - the rest is history.

Stillwell and Chennault pushed for and got the OSS to go train the Viet Minh when they left France and a deal was ratified but US law does not superceed international law and Ike's view of Stillwell and Chennault as loose cannons killed any hearing of DeGaulle not getting the French Empire her possession back.

The deal was that France lost the colony to Japan. If the Viet Minh drove the Japanese out, saving the allies the blood and effort, that they would have their own country as a democracy friendly to the US and allies. Win-Win. And then it was broken and look what resulted from that wrong! F__K, the French should have been glad enough to get their OWN country back is what I'm saying.

If RFK hadn't been shot, he'd have made a better President. Not perfect, just better.

Initially some Vietnamese welcomed the Japanese as liberators from the white French colonialists. It was Ho who saw them as just more invaders. You are absolutely right about the French. Charles de Gaulle even seems to have done a bit of blackmailing, threatening that France would have closer ties with the Soviets if Ike did not help get its colony back.

The sheer determination with which the Vietnamese routed the French at Dien Bien Phu should have made people think.

What would the world be like though if the Vietnamese war had never happened?
It would not necessarily have been a better place, the dogs of war would probably have been unleased even more readily elsewhere than they have been.

What, I need to say something else too?

Y'all watched the Ken Burns/Lynn Novak thing, right. I got chills watching it.
I will now.

I have watched https://www.netflix.com/gb/title/80991256 The Battle of Chosin, which was in the Korean war. North Korea had invaded the south. MacArthur pushed them back and, emboldened by success, pressed into the north, perhaps thinking he could take the whole country. Things did not go well and the Battle of Chosin was grim. Something else that should have rung alarm bells about Vietnam.

It is hard to say where I learnt about Vietnam as my memory gets confused about whether I saw something in the news at the time or saw it later in a documentary or film. I have spoken with Vietnam Veterans. One was an armed black security guard. I spent a couple of hours in his hut one night after he caught me climbing over a wall (a long story). We had coffee and talked about the hut's resident mouse and the war once I found out he was a veteran. He was a nice guy and I think because he was a Vet he was very relaxed dealing with me.

Most of my real understanding of the war actually came from a novel that I read years ago. I am 99.9% sure it was Saigon by Anthony Grey. I have looked it up just now and it gets good reviews from Veterans.

Back when it was going on and even later I was told that the war was necessary to prove to the soviets and chinese that we were willing to throw our kids into a fight and that if we weren't the enemy would be here.  It's only right if taken to the extreme.

In Korea at the Chosin Reservoir, mainly the Chinese sent their kids to fight. My AIT training Sgt was there. Less than 200 Marines backed by many well supplied cannon slaughtered 100,000 to 200,000 mainly Chinese night after night after night.

Wars aren't won by sheer numbers of kids sent to fight.

Domino Theory. If Ike hadn't caved to DeGaulle there would be no effing domino. If our IDIOTS hadn't gone everywhere pissing people off, there'd have been no places for communists to gain a foothold, don't blame others for our own screwups. Doing the same old same old is not going to fix anything but hey.... profffffffits!

This is worth watching, only 4mins, good ending.

How many "ordinary people's" lives did he destroy before it ended?

Oh wait, you wrote "good ending". It's a bit late for that in our case, much damage done already.

Our public broadcasting system is running a series on Dictators. I caught the NK episode last night that explained Kim Il Sung starting the Korean War and then shaping his nation into a totalitarian prison. I studied Communist Russia a bit and wow, Orwell was right about Stalin's system but NK took it even deeper and his #1 son really drove on that.

When everyone in your country is told to report on their neighbors, that to not do this means you are lazy and needing punishment yourself and with a secret police forcing this --- well you see, that's how to quash dissent. Add propaganda and political arrests, you can literally make yourself a god for your people.

Are we near that now? We've been headed this way since 1981. I expect a "terrorist attack" any time now with martial law and suspended elections and investigations of course.

Here is another good one; the Donald advises 'If there is a concrete wall in front of you, go through it, go over it, go round it, but get to the other side of that wall' LOL

What do you do after arresting 4000 terrorists at the airports they came in through?
Build a wall on the Mexican border to stop any more.

I swear that if the wall could be built from pure unadulterated STUPIDITY that Trump supporters could raise massive walls along the northern and southern borders in about a week. It would make China's Great Wall look like a picket garden fence.
