Topic: Invalid Device Signature error. Burn Bootloader on ATMEGA328PU using Arduino (Read 274 times) previous topic - next topic

I want to run my project on a standalone ATmega328 instead of the Arduino Pro Mini 5V I've been using. I pulled an ATmega328PU of an Arduino Uno R3 I already had and have been following this tutorial to program it using the internal clock (no crystal): https://www.arduino.cc/en/Tutorial/ArduinoToBreadboard



I have:
Uploaded the ArduinoISP sketch onto an Uno
Downloaded the breadboard-1-6-x.zip (I am running Arduino 1.8.1) and placed it in a "hardware" folder in my sketchbook folder
Restarted the Arduino software
Chose ATmega328 on breadboard for the Board
Made all of the necessary wiring connections (and quadruple-checked their accuracy)
Set Programmer to 'Arduino as ISP'


When I click Burn Bootloader, I get the following output:

If the chip is from a working Arduino Uno, its fuses will have already been set for the external crystal, and you won't be able to do any programming of the chip in a stand-alone environment unless you have the crystal, or use some mechanism to inject a clock signal.

It looks like I'll just be buying some ATmega328 chips that are completely unprogrammed then. Thank you!
