Whats the best way of going on to this.

Some numbers for you to play with:

From the VGA demo video you showed, assuming 320 x 200 resolution, the visible part of each line of video lasts (IIRC) about 25 microseconds (his timing was probably a bit lax, but the monitor would be a little forgiving).
That's enough to execute about 400 instructions (machine instructions, remember, not C statements) at 16MHz.
Most of those instructions will be writing stuff to the output DACs, leaving the blanking overhead of about 10-15% of the total frame time to do other stuff.

Thats impressive for an AVR. It highlights the issues with noobs and youtube videos, I consider myself a reasonably competent arduino programmer, but theres no way on earth I could produce something like that. It isn't video, its clever direct VGA signal manipulation and it is limited to low numbers of colours and straight forward mathematical algorithms.  But my hats off to the guy who did the software..........

I have done CCIR video in assembler on a PIC at 1MHz instruction rate, and that was hairy.
I just about managed seven-segment style numerals to make a clock, and a simple greyscale test pattern.

He managed music too!

hmm i might just try making Chiptunes as i like the music part aswell.
