Would this make some soft tones with the TONE() function driven directly off a I/O pin with a small resistor?

...it says 12volts, but it should still make some noise on 5 shouldn't it, just not too loud?

just try it, too low voltage will certainly not blow the thing

I was driving audio directly to a headphone ear-bud without a resistor, it still works. I only added a resistor later to make the circuit better. ;-) On my better headphones I still get a good volume, but it doesn't blow the thing up.
