Bigger Bigger Smaller Smaller Reset Reset

I followed this tutorial http://www.arduino.cc/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1254964306/0#0 and used the code for hooking up an NES controller to an Arduino. It's almost working, but the serial monitor is printing gibberish.

Any ideas what's going wrong here?

Only thing I can guess is that my jumper wires may not be fitting snug enough into the NES holes. (Might need to be deeper for a better connection, but only wire I have right now is the pre-cut kind with the black handle already on them). Would that be causing the problem?

Thanks in advance.

FYI problem solved. Ended up using this awesome library: http://arduino.cc/forum/index.php/topic,8560.0.html

(as well as making sure I held in the wires tight while I pressed buttons)
