the whole point of a "shift register",  is that you wouldn't need a whole row of switches.

You'd only need two,   a data switch and a clock switch.   Manipulating these two switches
would enable you to load your desired bit pattern into the whole register.

the whole point of my manual shift register was as a learning exercise, and I feel that I learnt a lot, but thanks for your "positive comment" anyway. Have a nice day
