the whole point of a "shift register",  is that you wouldn't need a whole row of switches.

You'd only need two,   a data switch and a clock switch.   Manipulating these two switches
would enable you to load your desired bit pattern into the whole register.

With all due respect michinyon,

the whole point of my manual shift register was as a learning exercise, and I feel that I learnt a lot, but thanks for your "positive comment" anyway. Have a nice day  smiley-cool
