So the idea is to tag all items at a store with rfid tags, dump them into a shopping cart, walk through the scanner and it automatically sums up the prices and gives your running total. No need for a cashier. Any input on issues/implementation?

Yes this thing as been done but you need a tag system that will:-
1) read at quite a distance
2) read with lots of tags in the field
3) implements an anti collision algorithm

This results in needing a very high frequency RFID system in the GHz regions. Commercial readers exist but they are very expensive. It is not the sort of thing a beginner can tackle. Plus the tags are quite pricy (considering the number you need).
