Not mine, unfortunately, but here's an amazing video on TED about a great bot that flies by flapping:

Plenty of robots can fly -- but none can fly like a real bird. That is, until Markus Fischer and his team at Festo built SmartBird, a large, lightweight robot, modeled on a seagull, that flies by flapping its wings. A soaring demo fresh from TEDGlobal 2011.


That is pretty amazing. I was not expecting lots of cogs. Its like the Owl of Jason and the Argonaughts.

Yeah, I was kind of expecting space-age materials and a pile of nano-electronics. Their approach is very elegant.
