Given the level of detail you have provided, you probably could start by getting an arduino and a Camera Laser trigger.
Google forum search: Use Google Advanced Search and use Http://forum.arduino.cc/index in the "site or domain:" box.

And the camera is a point-and-shoot, an SLR, a DSLR, a medium-format, an Arriflex, a Red...?

is this possible?

That depends on your reply to my last question in reply #4.

And does this device have an external shutter release socket?
(You could be a little more helpful)

The camera in the post looks to me like a Canon IXUS, which is not a DSLR or an SLR.
I doubt it has an external shutter release.
If the camera you have is like the one in the video, how confident are you in opening up the casing and putting it back together with wires soldered to the shutter switch?

Yes it does.

Get hold of a laser module, a phototransistor or an LDR and some screw terminals. Maybe some optocouplers as well. The one from the video uses an LDR, which I hear are a little slower.

This 'laser card' is very simple to use, just plug it into the right voltage and away you go.

If you don't have one knocking about right now, use a bright LED for the moment.
